Euro Winner? – Summer Games in Winter is the key

April 14th, 2010 by · No Comments · Betting, Football

Assuming this is no coincidence most commentators trot out the adage that European teams don’t travel well. The truth is more likely to be a combination of long seasons, time zones and weather. So the fact that this tournament is played in ‘Winter’ and is in similar time-zones to European competitors has the bookies scratching their heads.

The first African World Cup obviously has no history so provides nothing to suggest form. So, go with the European curse or regard this one as ‘local’? The bookies currently have it aligned with FIFA rankings but expect some movement nearer June 10th.

10/1 [BoyleSports] for Argentina with ‘Best Player in the World’ looks worth a punt as is 28/1 [SportingBet] for Ivory Coast and, especially, Portugal with ‘Prettiest Player in the World’. Current averages across the top 5 bookies look like this.

  • Spain 4/1
  • Brazil  5/1
  • England  11/2
  • Argentina 9/1
  • Germany 12/1
