Free Lions, Four venues?

The Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) will be running a Fans’ Embassy service in the 3 host cities of all England’s fixtures this summer.

Supported by the FA, Premier League and PFA, FSF is designed to ‘support travelling England fans and also improve the image of Engalnd fans’, and the English in general, abroad. They also seem to be involved with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Department of Culture Media and Sport, Independent Football Commission and the Police.

They also provide a free 150-page full-colour guidebook. The only catch is that you have to visit a Nationwide [FA sponsors] branch to pick it up. For more information try here.

Never heard of them? Me neither. However they do seem to be doing good works on the ground in South Africa. They will be proving ‘embassies’ for travelling fans in need of advice and support and sponsoring local events like the Cool Britannia music festival in Cape Town.

Each embassy will be sited in the group games host cities: Rustenburg for the USA game, Cape Town for the match against Algeria, and Port Elizabeth for the last group game against Slovenia. They plan to publish a new edition of their ‘Free Lions’ fanzine, currently on issue 102, for each England game.

They say that Free Lions is a ‘mixture of football opinion, irreverent humour and crucially, vital local information and advice for fans’. Lets hope they are still around to publish issue 109 on 11th July.
