worldcup online – the real conversation

You’re not at Stamford Bridge. You’re on the Boer Ridge.

Just this weekend we were saying there is no official World Cup song, and were very happy about it.

Looks bad in the newspapers and upsets civilians at their breakfast

Well, this morning I stumbled across this ‘unofficial’ one that has a bit of pedigree. Whether it’s a dog or not I will leave up to you but it certainly has the right breeding.

England’s Heartbeat, written by Mark E Smith of Fall fame, features long time collaborator Ed Blaney and Jenny Shuttleworth (Girl Peculiar). Just like World in Motion it’s Indie, it’s Salford, it’s a bit odd and a bit good. And of course with Mark E Smith you are guaranteed a few laugh-out-loud lyrics.

  • It’s not 1974 it’s not 1976, You’re not at Stamford Bridge, You’re on the Boer Ridge
  • socks up at last or be a brazilian break-fast
  • when you’re losing your dreams, hold on tight, and Think…ENGLAND…

Popular? The track will be released officially on 7th June but is doing well on iTunes and Amazon, top 10 when I last looked. It’s also being used by Sky and plugged by NME.

According to Voiceprint, home of indie weirdness, it’s ‘possibly the greatest world cup record ever’ – possibly.
