Lost your skipper? Beset by injuries? Relying on a mix of creaking veterans and untried youngsters? Burdened by expectation at home?

Welcome to Germany’s world cup squad.

You didn't see me - right?

Listen to any english panel of pundits and you can bet your house that ‘being thereabouts’ and ‘never write them off’ will be phrases mindlessly trotted out at some point. The people who know, bookies, have Germany at a whopping 14-1 despite still being ranked 6th by FIFA.

So who’s right? The only recognisable starters are Klose, Lahm, Podolski and maybe Schweinsteiger of Bayern [I have it on good authority that his name means 'pig botherer' but that's from a Stuttgart fan]. The rest are extremely promising youngsters with little, or no, experience of international tournaments. Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Marko Marin are tipped for greatness but World Cups are the proof of the Stollen.

In their favour Germany have great attacking options across midfield. That showed in a smooth, unbeaten, qualifying campaign that yielded 26 goals in ten games. They do, however, have the weakest defence in years, with a roster of keepers with no major tournament experience.

Group D is hard to call but, assuming Germany top it, they would probably meet USA and then Argentina. Expect them to get through the first but not the second. Going out in the QF would be their worst international result since 1998 and that shocker against Croatia.

The nightmare scenario is that either England or Germany come up short in their respective groups and meet in the second round – messy…
