Capello announces starting 11 and bench

Two central midfielders walk into a bar...

Don Fabio’s pre-tournament experiments have been exposed as elaborate diversionary tactics as WCO learns the starting line-up for the USA game. We have also seen the ‘stand-by’ line-up for either emergencies [the scores are level late in the game] or if the score allows England to rest key players for the Algeria turkeyshoot.

He starts with a 4-5-1 formation and will revert to 4-4-2 if/when necessary.

Despite banging on about 4-4-2 for the last few months his pre-tournament friendly fiascos have been an elaborate ploy, a sleight of hand. Although presumably aimed at keeping opponents guessing it has had the added benefit of reducing England supporters, and media, expectations.

It’s now clear what he expects of Rooney, why Joe Cole made the squad, why he has been prepared to wait and wait for Barry, and why Walcott was a risk he didn’t need to take. The starting line-up is:

James, Cole, Terry, King, Johnson, Joe Cole, Milner, Gerrard, Lampard, Lennon, Rooney.

Rooney will play up-front alone, supported by Cole and Lennon from wide midfield. In possession England can have three attacking players in combinations rather than wingers simply running the touchlines and crossing for an isolated striker.

The A Team, 4-5-1

Capello has answered the question about how to accommodate Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard in the same midfield. For this game [only] Gerrard will play a holding midfield role in the absence of Barry and revert to Left Midfield against Algeria, Slovenia, etc. That move will be at the expense of Milner or Joe Cole. Lampard plays Right Midfield. Both players are further apart, and advanced, than a traditional midfield four, and that enables them to work with their respective wide midfield players and exploit their own instincts to join attacks.

Capello has never waivered from playing a ‘flat’ back four and this line-up is no exception. The only tinkering will be King resting against Algeria to make way for Upson or Dawson. In both formations the wide right player of choice is Lennon, with SWP as back up. So, no need for a third string replacement [Walcott].

Plan B, 4-4-2

The subs tell us all we need to know about Plan B. In the event of things not going as hoped the option to bring on Heskey to partner Rooney is written on the bench; Green [for James], Heskey [Plan B], Carrick [midfield cover], Defoe [for Rooney, just in case], Carragher [insurance across the back].

Let’s just hope Plan A works…

Thanks for adding this as soon as Capello announced the team to play on Saturday against the USA. I think it’s not too bad. Come on England!
