Clash of the Titans – ‘Titans will clash’

On me 'ead son

Like the gods intervening to monkey with the affairs of men this World Cup has, for England, provided the opportunity for that great gazpacho of human emotion – revenge.

Not just any revenge but the compete set. What kind gods they be for they provide, in the space of fourteen days, the chance for England to lay to rest ALL of their football demons and right the perceived wrongs of the past.

The road to glory is, of course, paved with a series of tests and with danger. In keeping with the great Greek epics there will be giants, beasts, joy and pain. Think Demis Roussos stadium gig with George Michael guesting.

Yes, the nemeses [nemesii?] of English football are laid before them; Germany and all those penalties; Argentina for that hand ball and being penguin botherers; Portugal for red cards, hair gel and winking; and finally Brazil for that lucky cross that saw Seaman’s attempts to save fall on stony ground.

It is writ, maybe, that once these foes are vanquish-ed then the quest will be done. A World Cup trophy, a second star for the Lions. What a blessed relief that would be.

Although, while we dream of glory, we should also remember that the Gods make you mad before they finish you off. Which would explain Maradona.
