The most critical game for England during the group stage could well be against Slovenia [The Dragons] in their last game on 23rd June.

Robot Boy

Your style is unorthodox. But effective.

The bookies are offering 2-1 for an England win and only 3-1 for a draw in the opening game against USA. The outcome, I would wager, will be a lot closer than some tabloids would have us believe.

With England, historically slow starters in tournaments, a draw is the most likely outcome. England would therefore need a healthy win in their next game. That means scoring as many as possible [ie. more than the USA] against the group whipping boys, Algeria.

By the final game in Port Elizabeth England may need to beat Slovenia by some margin to top the group and avoid Germany in the next round. Slovenia were beaten only twice in 10 Qualifying games. Along the way they put out the Czech Republic, Poland and Norn Ireland, never losing by more than the single goal. They then beat Russia in a two-leg play-off. They are no push-overs.

All three of Englands group opponents play a rigid 4-4-2 so this is a fantastic opportunity for Capello to embrace some adventurous tactics and take the initiative. It looks like he’s been toying with exactly that approach in the last few warm-up games. But what style will he choose?

Bullshit, Mr Hahn-emann

Maybe he’ll try the ‘Praying Mantis’, with Crouch up front, the ‘Monkey’ with Rooney swinging at the nearest official, or ‘Drunken Boxing’ with Gerrard going on the offensive?
