Golden Generation or Shower?

So, England’s Dads Army against a strapping young Germany? The tabloid pixies will be doing overtime down the pun mines. Dubbed the Golden Generation as long ago as 2002, for them, if not the war, at least the international career, is over.

This overpaid shower have played 30mins of half decent football in 3 matches and it would be best for everyone if they retired, in every sense, after Sundays game.

It needn’t have come to this. Rooney’s miss against Slovenia yesterday cost England an easy route to the semis. You wonder what this tournament might have looked like if he was fit and firing.

A 2-0 win would have put England on course for a Second Round against Ghana then a QF with Uruguay or South Korea. Winning those 2 games would put them in the semi-finals.

England’s second place in Group C now means getting past Germany and Argentina. I know that old cliché about ‘beating the best’ if you want to win a trophy but Italy, for example, have made a virtue of growing stronger as tournaments progress. That’s no longer an option for England.

By winning the group this team could have stayed in the tournament and, like Robson’s 1990 squad, returned home with some dignity attached. That’s a retirement home for most of the squad by the way.

Much like 1990 the teams significant shortcomings would have been glossed over and replaced by the bittersweet memories of failing/falling at the last/later hurdle.

In 1990 a miserable group stage, rescued by a single goal from a defender, was followed by an, extra-time, 1-0 win against Belgium. Next came a narrow win against a suicidal, naive Cameroon. But all we remember is the glorious failure of the Semi-Final against Germany.

Would it be nice to finally replace it with a new, shiny, memory of an England win over Germany? No. That would simply perpetuate the myth that this team is as ‘Golden’ as they think they are. Put them out of our misery now.
