GOD Head says - 'Ivory Coast by 2 goals'

At last, the day we’ve all been waiting for. Group G. Today we’ll see the first games in the toughest group in the tournament and, hopefully, some of the most entertaining. This tournament needs it.

First up Ivory Coast v Portugal [3pm Ellis Park]

Will Drogba play? Despite still having his arm in a cast he has been training regularily. FIFA inspected his cast this morning and decided it is eligable. That will be a boost to Ivory Coast who, with Toure Y and K, Kalou, Didier Zakora and Eboue, have one of the strongest squads in the finals. Interesting fact – they scored all but one of 24 penalties in two marathon shoot outs with Ghana and Cameroon – must be germans.

On the dark side – Cristiano Ronaldo. He at last finds himself in an environment where blowing his own trumpet won’t be necessary. The Golden One has not scored in the qualifying competition and Portugal needed a play-off win against Bosnia to qualify. On top of that bad form they have lost Nani. Sent home due to injury say the officials. The rumours say everything from a fight with Carlos Queiroz to a failed drugs test.

GOD Head predicts – “They still have quality in Deco, Alves, Carvalho and Simao but the speed, power and stamina of Ivory Coast should be too much for them”.

History is not on their side. Qualifying just twice since the days of Eusebio [1986 and 2002] they have entered tipped as contenders and gone home after the first round. If they do make it through this group, in second place behind Brazil, they will meet Spain – humdinger.

Is Sven worth £2m a year? Uweeeeeeeeeeeeellll

This match also has a Premier League tint – Man City v Man United. Sven-Goran Eriksson pits his very expensive wits against mini-Ferg Carlos Queiroz.

Likely Teams

Ivory Coast (4-4-2): Barry; Eboue, K Toure, Bamba, Tiene; Romaric, Zokora, Y Toure, Tiote; Kalou, Doumbia.

Portugal (4-3-3): Eduardo; Ferreira, Alves, Carvalho, Coentrao; Mendes, Meireles, Deco; Ronaldo, Simao, Liedson.

Referee: Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay).
