Quarter Pounder

USA won’t be overly worried about the way the second phase draw has shaped up. With a game against Ghana tonight their relentless energy and in-form strikers should prove that a place in the semi-finals is there for the taking.

Uruguay, their Quarter Final opponents, may have a potent three-man forward threat but their tendency to sit on a lead will be a welcome invitation for the workaholic midfield of Bradley, Dempsey and Beasley.

They will also have the advantage of familiarity. Their qualifying group featured Costa Rica, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Cuba so the style of Uruguay will hold no surprises.

Their experience in the Confederations Cup last year, on the same pitches and in the same conditions, is looking increasingly like a huge advantage. They beat Spain 2-0 in Bloemfontein and led Brazil, at Ellis Park, by 2-0 in the final before losing by a single goal.

They may meet again in the semi-finals here and the confidence of winning their group and two knock-out victories may see them through against a, to date, lackluster Canarinhos.

If you fancy a flutter USA are still way out at 16-1 to reach the final and a tempting 40-1 to win it. Go large!
